Ian obtained both of his degrees in Materials Engineering from the University of Leeds in 1986 and 1990. He became a Chartered Engineer and a Professional Member of the Institute of Materials (now the Institute of Materials, Minerals & Mining) in 1991.
Ian joined Burgoynes in 1998 and is based at the Ilkley office. Since 1998, he has undertaken over 500 investigations into incidents primarily of an engineering/materials nature both on land and at sea in Europe, Canada, South America and Africa. Ian is familiar with the Civil Procedure Rules and has often given Expert evidence in Court including the High Court and Technology and Construction Court. He has also acted as a Single Joint Expert on several civil litigation cases and has attended mediations and arbitration tribunals.
He has investigated incidents involving, but not limited to, plant and machinery on board ships and in numerous industries including manufacturing, power generation, construction, petrochemical, and cold storage. He has investigated incidents resulting in personal injury arising from structural failures of components within boilers, pressure vessels, lifting equipment, loaders and ceilings for example. Many investigations have required a detailed understanding of the properties and failure mechanisms of metals, polymers, glasses, refractories and composites; including corrosion, degradation, fatigue, creep and impact. He has also investigated the causes of transmission losses in both terrestrial and marine optical cables.
