Danny Pointon

Daniel Pointon received a Masters Degree in Natural Sciences at the University of Cambridge, after specialising in Physics, and in particular, solid state materials and thermodynamics. During this period he also performed original research work on impact ballistics and high speed material failures. This work was funded by both military and commercial end-products users.

After a brief period of teaching physics at Dulwich College, London, Daniel joined Dr J H Burgoyne & Partners LLP in 1991. Since that time he has been involved in the investigation of incidents worldwide. On land, he has investigated losses arising from fires, explosions, water leaks, chemical spillages, mechanical failures, road traffic accidents and burglary, and he has given evidence in Civil, Criminal, and Coroner's Courts both in the UK, and in Singapore. He has lectured to the UK Institution of Fire Engineers, and at the University of Dundee Fire Investigation Course on fire investigation techniques, with special reference to electrical causes of fire. He has also lectured on fire investigation techniques to various Police Forces and Fire Brigades within the UK.

Daniel has been involved in numerous marine cases. These have included the investigation of fires and explosions in machinery spaces, accommodation areas and cargo tanks and holds and has involved vessels at sea, and in dockyards. Advice has also been given to Owners, P&I Clubs and Salvors on the likely outcome of salvage incidents, for the purposes of arbitration. Daniel has, in addition, provided advice and supervision during the extinguishment and control of fires in cargoes including direct reduced iron (DRI), coal, fishmeal and mixed hazardous cargoes. Advice has been provided on the causes of cargo contamination in materials including various liquid and solid foodstuffs, timber cargoes and cement.

Daniel has also provided technical advice regarding the causes of various asphyxiation cases within cargo tanks and other confined spaces.

Daniel worked in the Singapore Office of Dr J H Burgoyne and Partners LLP from 1993 to 1996. He transferred to the Glasgow Office in 1996, from where he has worked on a variety of cases Overseas and in the United Kingdom. Daniel is a Principal Member of Dr J H Burgoyne and Partners LLP.
