David was awarded a first class honours degree in Electronic and Electrical Engineering from Salford University, England in 1985. He is a Chartered Engineer, a Member of the Institution of Engineering and Technology (formerly the Institution of Electrical Engineers) and a Member of the Institute of Measurement and Control in the UK.
David joined Burgoynes in 1992 as a consulting engineer specialising in the investigation of fires, explosions and other incidents on behalf of insurance companies, their legal advisors, loss adjusters and others. He became a Partner in July 1999.
Fire/explosion investigations David has dealt with have involved residential/commercial buildings, ships/luxury yachts and motor vehicles. He has also investigated the failure of electrical and electronic equipment and incidents where people have been electrocuted or suffered serious injury due to electric shocks. Since working for Burgoynes he has undertaken well over 1,000 investigations for the company, mainly based in the UK but some have taken him overseas to the USA and to several countries in Europe and Asia. Many of the incidents he has investigated have been high profile and in several cases have involved losses amounting to many tens of millions of pounds sterling.
Whilst working for Burgoynes David has given expert oral testimony in two Coroners Courts, two County Courts and the High Court in the UK; and in Castlebar High Court in the Republic of Ireland. Numerous other cases have involved him attending conferences with counsel and preparing reports for courts both in the UK and overseas, which have settled before being required to give expert testimony. During his time with the company he has also given lectures on various aspects of fire investigation to insurance companies, loss adjusters, Fire Service personnel and to a regional meeting of the Institution of Electrical Engineers.
Prior to being employed by Burgoynes, David worked for sixteen years in the UK chemical industry for two major international chemical companies, Solvay and Monsanto. He served a four year indentured Instrument Mechanic apprenticeship with Solvay immediately upon leaving school. Within two years of completing this apprenticeship he was promoted by this company to the position of Control Engineer. Shortly after obtaining his degree he took up employment with Monsanto as an Electrical and Electronics Engineer. Whilst working in the chemical industry David majored on the design, installation and maintenance of process control instrumentation and electrical power distribution systems.
