Martin spent four years as a firefighter with Kent Fire Brigade and then thirteen years with Kent Police, initially as a Scenes of Crime Officer, and later as a Senior Crime Scene Investigator.  He obtained a BSc (hons) degree in 2000.

Martin joined Burgoynes in 2004, since which time he has been continuously involved in the investigation of fires and explosions.  The incidents have ranged from small domestic cases to major incidents and multiple fatalities.

Martin has lectured to students on Crime Scene Investigation courses both in Kent and at the former National Training Centre (Centrex) in Durham. More recently he has lectured to students studying Forensic Science courses at Christchurch University, Canterbury.  Martin is a Chartered Physicist and a Member of the Institute of Physics.
