Miles attained a Higher National Diploma in Mechanical and Production Engineering before obtaining an honours degree in Mechanical Engineering, Materials and Manufacture from the University of Nottingham in 1992.
Miles joined the Military Aircraft division of British Aerospace in 1992 as a Materials Engineer where he was responsible for the investigation of in-service failures, for the provision of in-house technical support to the manufacturing functions and for conducting research and development into new materials and novel manufacturing processes. Miles progressed to Section Leader of the Product Support and Failure Investigation Group where he concentrated on metallurgical failure investigation, which on occasion involved assisting the Department of Transport’s Air Accident Investigation Branch.
Miles joined Burgoynes in 1997 and became a Partner in 2005. Since 1997 Miles has been engaged in the forensic investigation of incidents of an engineering nature, particularly those requiring expertise in the fields of mechanical engineering, metallurgy or materials science. He has undertaken over 500 investigations and has been required to attend court to give expert testimony both in the UK and overseas. Miles attained Chartered Engineer status soon after joining Burgoynes and he obtained his Master of Science degree in Advanced Materials Technology from the University of Surrey in 2002.
