On 5 November 2019, Burgoynes partner Frank Anderson visited NFU Mutual headquarters in Stratford-upon-Avon, where he delivered a presentation titled “Little Drips, Bright Sparks and Big Bangs” to a meeting of the Stratford-upon-Avon Insurance Institute.

The presentation outlined how a Forensic Engineer can be of assistance to the insurance industry, covering investigation methodology and the benefits of investigating a range of incidents, such as:

escapes of water and oil, where the likelihood of a positive outcome for insurers is high;

fires involving plant and machinery, which can involve high-value equipment and necessitate extensive investigation to satisfactorily determine the cause; and

engineering failures, involving plant such as large diesel engines.  He also explained why a multidisciplinary approach, involving engineering specialists and metallurgists, may be required in some incidents.

Although forensic investigations can be relatively complex, Frank used a number of case studies, which are highly visual in nature, to present an overview of the topic.
